Contrary to popular folklore, most clothing in the 18th century was not made at home. Although sewing was a common household task, the tailor’s skills of properly cutting and fitting clothing were learned in an apprenticeship. “Taylors” (as the trade title is often spelled in the period) made and mended coats, waistcoats, and breeches for men of all sorts, as well as ladies’ stays and riding habits, and were amongst the most numerous of trades in the 18th century city.
