The Betsy Ross flag- an early design of the United States flag- is beautifully captured here on a charming Limoges box. The flag is popularly attributed to Betsy Ross and uses the common motifs of an alternating red-and-white striped field with five-pointed stars in a blue canton. The flag was designed during the American Revolution and features 13 stars to represent the original 13 colonies. The distinctive feature of the Ross flag is the arrangement of the stars in a circle. Handmade and hand-painted porcelain. 1¾" x 2¾" x ¾"
Discovered near Limoges- France- in the 1700s- kaolin clay allowed the French to compete in the European race to make porcelain. Today- true Limoges boxes- like this one decorated with an intricately hand-painted flag design- are collected more avidly than ever. Made in France. Small boxes, of this type, were used on women’s dressing tables in the 18th century to hold patches. Face patches were made of fabric or leather and came in different shapes and sizes. They were adhered to a woman’s face to highlight a part of her face, or to cover something up. Also used as a token of affection.
