Scaled for your tree, this wooden Capitol ornament captures the distinct charm of this historic Williamsburg building. When the capital moved to Richmond in 1780, the vacant brick mansion was put to use by American forces as a hospital following the siege of Yorktown. Just before Christmas in 1781, a fire broke out, burning the magnificent building to the ground. The reconstructed building, authentically refurbished and interpreted, has welcomed visitors since 1934.
At the time of its completion in 1722, the Governor's Palace was considered the finest such building in British America. Elegant, imposing, and rigidly symmetrical in its design, the Palace served as the residence and official headquarters of seven royal governors and the first two governors of the Commonwealth of Virginia— Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson.
