A beautifully crafted girl's pocket—a colonial accessory and necessity. During the 17th and 18th centuries when women's skirts were full and wide, women wore teardrop-shaped bags around their waists and under their skirt to carry items they needed. Separate from the dress, these "pockets" could be switched from gown to gown. When clothes became slimmer, about the 1790s to about 1800, women didn't want to ruin the lines of their nice, slim, clingy neoclassical gown with the big bulging pocket underneath, so they started carrying pocketbooks. Even though our clothes today may have sewn-in pockets, we still carry the handbag because very few clothes can carry all the stuff that we need with us every day. This girl's pocket was hand-crafted in Colonial Williamsburg's costume sewing room using reproduction fabric.
The items that appear in Colonial Williamsburg's stores today are based upon antique apparel in the collection as well as on period prints and paintings. Fabrics that closely approximate those available to 18th-century customers are used.
