This romantic piece is reproduced from a French faience inkwell, circa 1800. (1 7/8"H x 2 1/2"W)
Delft, named for its city of origin, is earthenware with a distinctive pale blue tin glaze. Production of delft became a major part of the British ceramics industry during the 17th and 18th centuries. Protectionist British legislation prevented importation of delft and other painted earthenware into England and the Navigation Acts required that all goods to the colonies be carried on English ships, so during the 18th century, most delft imported into the colonies was made in England. Reproduced from a French faience inkwell, circa 1800.
