Judging from 18th-century letters and inventories, Colonial Williamsburg's citizens spent a lot of time at the card table. Williamsburg tavern keepers bought as many as six dozen packs at a time from the Printing Office. Playing cards were imported from England and printed on heavy paper with woodblocks. Face cards were handpainted, and the backs were left plain. The I Hardy cards are based on a deck printed circa 1765.

I’ve had this deck longer than you would think.

These cards have been with me for around 10 years. They have held up beautifully. I actually purchased the Aesop’s fables deck and was disappointed to find that the playing cards were just printed in the top corner & looked nothing like a “deck of cards”. I tried to return/exchange them, but no one was available to help me. So I switched it myself and ran back to be with my school group. I love these cards dearly and they handle just as poorly as I imagine, but it is cathartic imagining a deck of cards used hundreds of years ago. Sorry I messed up the shops inventory so long ago. I hope the statute of limitations has passed. What an amazing deck. I wish I could know more about them.
