Bird prints by George Edwards, one of the foremost naturalists of the 18th century, inspired the parrot image on this colorful accent pillow. Often considered the father of modern British ornithology, Edwards is best known for his two major publications: A Natural History of Uncommon Birds (1743-1751), followed by its continuation work Gleanings of Natural History(1758-1764) which collectively have 362 prints of birds and animals in natural settings. In the late 18th century, editions of Edwards' works also appeared in French, German, and Dutch. Hand-made with a pure wool face, cotton velvet zippered back, and polyfill insert, this 18" decorative pillow can be valued as much for its artistic detail as its soft comfort. Imported.
World exploration and natural discoveries had a profound effect on 18th-century Europe and North America. Naturalists recorded what they saw, and soon these depictions of "new" specimens, like parrots, were incorporated into prints, ceramics, textiles, and other objects. The fascination and romance of tropical designs was strong then and remains enchanting today.
