The gimmel ring has symbolized friendship and marriage since the Roman times. This sterling silver gimmel ring consists of three bands joined at the base in such a way that when closed, the two hands are clasped together, when opened a heart is in the center. Traditionally, the conjoined rings were separated at the engagement ceremony or betrothal moment; the outer bands presented to the bride and groom and the middle band to a close friend of the bride. At the wedding ceremony, the hands were reunited and the third finger of the bride's left hand.
The gimmel ring (from the Latin gemellus meaning twin) has symbolized friendship and marriage since Roman times. Gimmel rings were often used as wedding rings in the 18th century. Traditionally, the conjoined rings were separated at the engagement ceremony; the outer bands were presented to the bride and groom and the middle band to a close friend of the bride. At the wedding ceremony, the bands were reunited on the third finger of the bride's left hand. A great deal of significance was placed on the wedding ring in the 18th century. On the subject of "secure happiness in the married state," the Lady's Monthly Museum published in 1799 advised women to "Always wear your wedding ring...if you are ruffled unawares, assaulted with improper thoughts, or tempted in any kind against your duty cast your eye upon it and call to mind who gave it to you, where it was received and what passed at that solemn time."
Clean with a silver polishing cloth.
