With coffee shops on every corner, ours is certainly a caffeinated society. But our age is no match for the 18th century, when tea and coffee were relatively new discoveries. With these new beverages came new ceramic designs. Covered teacups and mugs, which keep drinks hot longer, were already in use in China. It was the handle that was a uniquely Western innovation.
Our covered mug, with its hand-painted design taken from our 18th-century delftware collection, echoes its predecessors. But we've updated it by attaching the cover so that it lifts with a simple push of the thumb.
