Solid burled mahogany
WILLIAMSBURG by Global Views
The serving tray, more than any other object, represents the meeting of upstairs and downstairs in wealthy British households. Footmen carried food and dining wares from a far-removed kitchen on sturdy oval mahogany trays bound with brass hoops. Silver salvers for the presentation of tea equipage were locked for safekeeping in a silver cupboard in the butler's pantry. These trays were inspired by antiques in the Colonial Williamsburg collection, displayed in the Governor's Palace and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum.
