Inspiration:
Brisé fans were commonly used in the early 18th century and were constructed to create a repeating pattern which gave the illusion of filigree or lace. They were typically composed of elaborately carved and thinly sliced pieces of bone, horn, tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, or ivory that were then gilded and painted. Discover the brisé fans in our digital collections and view more in person at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg.
