Inspiration
Tavern keepers usually were people of consequence during the eighteenth century. They hosted guests, were conversant with all current matters of importance, and knew when to keep counsel or keep silent. They also provided ample food and refreshment to weary travelers. When Jane Vobe opened the King’s Arms Tavern in 1772, it became one of the town's most genteel establishments. She once described it as a place "where the best people resorted."
