Based on a delft plate probably made in London during the 1740s, the design of this dinnerware service is interpreted from a plate in the Colonial Williamsburg collection which relates to fragments found on the actual site of Shield's Tavern in Williamsburg. This interpretation incorporates unusual design elements such as the manganese purple ground and the blue fish.

Tavernware is based on period delft designs that have been interpreted for modern dinnerware. Plates take the form and shape of delft plates of the period while hollowares, such as teacups and teapots, have been adapted for modern requirements. Tavernware is decorated with elements from eighteenth-century patterns and is used in the taverns operating today in the Historic Area of Williamsburg.
