Inspiration
The transferware process was developed in England in the second half of the 18th century, most likely in the Staffordshire region, where several producers claimed to have invented the technique. Designs were made on copper plates, then transferred to paper, then to the pottery.
The highly-efficient process made mass production of ceramics with more uniform designs possible and affordable for the middle class. Transferware reached its popularity during the first quarter of the 19th century. You can see a large selection of ceramics at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg.
