Inspiration
The pineapple was a popular ornamental motif when the rococo style was the rage from 1745 to 1770. Representations of the pineapple are found on a wide variety of useful and ornamental wares in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg. Curiously at least two objects – an elegant epergne or dessert centerpiece and a large cast iron store – feature a pineapple positioned beneath a pagoda. The unexpected combination shows how the expansion of trade with the Orient had an impact on the arts of the 18th century.
