Inspiration
Martha Dandridge Custis Washington was a likable, determined, and practical woman. During her youth, she took on the management of a vast estate by herself. During the Revolutionary War, Martha traveled with her husband, General Washington, who provided a maternal presence to troops far from home. While Martha disliked the social obligations of being the first president's wife, Martha Washington established many traditions that the First Lady still practices today.
