Inspiration

An appliqued crib quilt dated 1850-1860 in the Colonial Williamsburg archives (object #1985.609.1) inspired the design of this WILLIAMSBURG Vintage Vinyl Floorcloth by Spicher & Co. The pattern is known as Tulip Cross. The use of crossed flowers with birds is characteristic of Pennsylvania-German quilts, although the example in our collections has a family history in Indiana. The German Richter family members lived in Indiana during the nineteenth century, likely bringing their country's design traditions with them. See the original in our digital collections.
