Inspiration
Highly decorative certificates documented the births, baptisms, and marriages of German-speaking people in America. Called fraktur, these hand-drawn and colored documents offer a visually appealing record of 19th-century individuals. They commonly featured birds, hearts, tulips, and scrolls.
About the Artist
Susan Daul is an American Folk Artist who specializes in the art of Fraktur, a traditional style of Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art. Her love for Folk Art began as a child, admiring “old things” on visits to historic sites with her parents. She turned her focus to Fraktur after being inspired by the charming use of animals, beautiful combinations of color and sentimental verses. Her works have found homes in Museum shops throughout the county and have been recognized in Early American Life Magazine's Directory of Craftsmen for over 25 consecutive years. Her work has been honored and featured in several other publications. In addition, Susan was asked to create an ornament for the Blue Room Christmas tree in the White House, which will remain in its permanent collection.
