The gold original of this ring, with a delicate interlacing pattern engraved on the outside, was enameled in black, red, and white. Poesy or love rings are gold bands engraved with a brief poem or sentiment. Inscribed rings are found as early as classical times when the inscriptions were usually dedicatory. Poesy rings reached their greatest popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries in England and France when they were used as a lover's token, a wedding ring, or simply as a means of showing regard or giving a gift. Their popularity in Elizabethan England is attested to by their frequent mention in Shakespeare's plays.
