Comments and tips from our sample artist:
"This paint-by-numbers project was both a challenge and a joy! It took me about 20 hours to complete the painting over ten sessions.
Dedicate a flat working space for your project. Protect your furnishings with a towel or water-resistant tablecloth, and keep rags or paper towels close at hand. Ensure you are working in a well-lit space and bring your readers! Some of the areas are small. A magnifying craft lamp can also assist you with seeing smaller sections.
Start at the top of the painting with the sky, palace, and skyline, and then work your way down, filling in one color at a time, working from light to dark as much as possible. An exception to this is the tulips which I added using thick dabs of paint to add texture and dimension to the painting.
Close the paint lids securely between uses and press down on the top to ensure they are tightly closed.
Some of the lighter colors are semi-transparent, requiring several coats. You may wish to employ an "impasto" style - or thick paint - to help cover the numbers for lighter paint colors if those are still showing through after a few coats. After I completed the project, I still had paint left over, so you should have plenty for re-touching.
The style of this painting is impressionistic, so don't worry if you don't get the paint precisely inside the lines. Step back from your picture every so often to ensure the overall impression is pleasing to your eye.
Lastly, go easy on yourself, and be sure to have FUN!"
Inspiration
The complex of gardens at the Governor's Palace are spread over 10 acres, and resemble English country estates during the reign of King William III and Queen Mary II. Three original features form the 18th century remain: the falling gardens (terraces), the ice house, and canal.
The photo used to create our paint-by-numbers set features a view of the palace from the back when the tulips are in full bloom during early spring.
