Product Description

Birds in Fleur Reproduction Fabric features a natural white ground with intricate red vines and large scale flowers and leaves in green, pink, red, yellow, blue and grey. The overall design reads a dark reddish pink from a distance. The Birds in Fleur design is reproduced from a block printed textile fragment dated 1780-1785 in The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's textile collections.

Product Care

Machine wash cold, tumble dry on low, warm iron. Do not use bleach or other fabric enhancers as this may cause the fabric to fade or bleed.

Inspiration

Printed fabrics were used to make fashionable clothing and to upholster home furnishings. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation collections include thousands of antique textiles. Our WILLIAMSBURG reproduction fabrics are adapted from and inspired by these originals.

The "Birds in Fleur" print comes from a wood block print textile fragment dated 1780 - 1785. (Object #197-134.)

From the curator:

"Textile is of linen warp-cotton weft, woven in tabby or plain weave, block printed in madder colors of red, pink, purple, and black with pencilled yellow, blue, and green (the latter yellow over blue). The design consists of undulating purple stems from which emanate exotic flowers, seed pods, berries, and leaves; paired birds perched on projecting stems. Background printed in light red in a network of spiky vines ("seaweed ground.") A remnant of blue silk binding tape is stitched along one edge. Once part of bed furniture."
