Inspiration
The ogee pattern can be traced back to the Tomb of Cyrus the Great in ancient Persia (559–529 BCE), located in present-day Iran, in the Fars region. As merchants and travelers began traveling the "Silk Road", the design traveled with them on textiles, appearing across the Middle East, down into Africa, and eventually into Europe. Interpretations of the ogee pattern can be seen on objects in our collections, historic houses, and our modern WILLIAMSBURG decorating fabrics and wallpapers. Archaeological discoveries in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia during the 18th century fueled a trend for ancient motifs in home décor.
