Inspiration
Washington Crossing the Delaware was painted by Emanuel Leutze in 1851 and is an idealized depiction of Washington's famous clandestine attack that took place December 25-26, 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. The first crossing of the Delaware was one in a series of a highly strategic maneuvers planned and led by General Washington to attack Hessian troops in Trenton, New Jersey. Washington and his troops defeated the Hessian troops during the Battle of Trenton, and ultimately the series of attacks led by Washington resulted in a decisive victory at Princeton on January 3, 1777.
