Inspiration
George Washington was the first president of the United States. He was the commander of the Continental Army, which led the patriots to victory during the Revolutionary War.
Before George Washington became the leader of the Continental Army, there was no standard uniform for officers or troops. Inspired by the deportment of British General Edward Braddock, Washington created the standard uniform scheme that would transform the U.S. Army into a unified professional military organization of distinction. Details of uniforms helped to designate rank and encouraged respect. While this transition to the new uniform was not complete during the Revolutionary War, it became the standard in the years following the war. The U.S. Army retained the blue and buff colors of the uniform until the beginning of the Civil War.
