Inspiration
Incised designs colored with blue cobalt blue were a style developed in the Rhineland during the late 16th century. Throughout the colonial period, this style was the standard for tavernware in England and its colonies.
This reproduction Stoneware Tavern Mug would have been a common sight in 18th-century taverns. Inexpensive mugs like this served up beer and cider to the masses. Archaeological digs in Williamsburg uncovered a high concentration of stoneware shards at former tavern locations, including one that inspired this mug.
