To avoid the tax on tea, it is estimated that over 90 percent of tea consumed by colonists was smuggled by the Dutch East India Company - which routinely outpaced the British. But when tea protests began, colonists even refused Dutch imported East Indian tea - to prove to King George that they protested on principle.
