Inspiration
A native of Virginia, George Washington spent much time in Williamsburg. In 1759, the then 27-year-old Washington took a seat in the House of Burgesses in the Capitol and helped shape the idea of self-government for the next 16 years. He dined with such locals as George Wythe and Peyton Randolph, worshipped at Bruton Parish Church, and enjoyed friendly evenings at the Raleigh, King's Arms, and Christiana Campbell's taverns.
After leading the Continental Army to victory in the Revolutionary War, and serving as the first President of the United States of America, Washington was called The Father of our Country even during his own lifetime. Scholars have consistently ranked him as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents.
