Inspiration
Cocoa, coffee, and tea—the introduction of these three beverages around the 1650s heralded one of the greatest social changes of the 17th century. Coffee houses became a central part of public life—where tittle-tattle, scandal, and business of the day were as important as food and drink—setting the stage for many of the time-honored customs we enjoy today.
This reproduction pewter tea caddy spoon is inspired by those in fashion in the mid to late 18th century. Many of the period's designs featured shell shapes inspired by the exotic shells that often accompanied large shipments of dried tea leaves imported from the East. The shells were used as tea scoops. From simple to ornate, 18th-century tea caddy spoons can be found in many wonderful designs including jockey caps, eagle wings, leaves, acorns, shovels, hearts, hands, and many other forms defined by the decorative arts of the time.
