Inspiration
Magnolia trees were thriving in Virginia and the eastern United States long before the first colonists arrived. Explorers were astonished by their first glimpse of this enormous, unusual tree with its fragrant giant blossoms. Magnolias continue to make a grand presence throughout Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area and are an iconic choice for decorating.
Japanese magnolias (Magnolia liliiflora) and other magnolia varieties from Asia were introduced to Europe in the 18th century, but didn't make there way to the United States until the 1860s. While this variety is not in the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg, you will see the beautiful white, pink, and purple blooms of the Japanese magnolia throughout Virginia.
