Inspiration
Fashioned in the London workshop of Paul de Lamerie, the candlesticks depicted in this design were commissioned by Sir Kendrick Clayton shortly after he succeeded his late father as the 2nd Baronet Clayton, of Marden, County Surrey. They have been the logo of the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum since its opening in 1985. The candlestick in the museum’s collection, one from a set of four, is sterling silver. Based on classical Ionic columns, these candlesticks were a strikingly modern design for 1745/1746.
