Inspiration
Eighteenth-century Williamsburg was the home of many ardent gardeners and plant collectors who often exchanged seeds with fellow enthusiasts in Great Britain. Lilacs arrived in America from Eastern Europe in the 18th century and graced the gardens of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, and were also documented at the Governor's Palace. Today, lilacs in their many shades of white, pink, and purple bloom throughout the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg in April, filling the brick-lined pathways with their lovely aroma.
