Inspiration
Our faux floral collections represent plants that were either grown in the gardens of Colonial Williamsburg or featured in artwork or rare books documenting their existence in colonial America. The 18th century was a period of great interest in the natural world, and both scientists and artists were drawn to the study of flora and fauna. Peonies and their hybrids were introduced to North America from Europe, and evidence supports that they were grown in the gardens of Williamsburg during the 18th century. Today, you can find roses and peonies blooming around Mother's Day in the restored Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg, including at the Governor's Palace gardens and the Lewis house gardens.
