Inspiration
Eighteenth-century Williamsburg was the home of many ardent gardeners and plant collectors who often exchanged seeds with fellow enthusiasts in Great Britain. Peonies and their hybrids were introduced to North America from Europe, and evidence supports that they were grown in the gardens of Williamsburg during the 18th century. Today, you can find peonies blooming around Mother's Day in the restored Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg, including at the Governor's Palace gardens and the Lewis house gardens.
