Inspiration
An imaginatively shaped rooster weathervane in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum’s (AARFAM) Collection served as inspiration for the museum’s iconic rooster logo. The weathervane, believed to be from 1850 – 1875, employs unusual geometric cut-outs, in the rooster’s body that were probably intended to reduce weight. The rooster’s form and, especially, the design of the tail, relate to early rooster vanes, which justifies this example’s presumed date. A replica of the weathervane, hand forged by a local artist, tops the annual folk art Christmas tree in the AARFAM lobby.
