Inspiration
In the 18th century, each member of the "colonial militia" was required to show up with his own gun, a pound of shot, and a horn filled with black powder. Young men generally personalized their powder horns with engravings. Eighteenth-century examples often bear the owner's name, commemorative dates, and all kinds of illustrations.
