Inspiration
This quotation reflects Thomas Jefferson's love of books. The Chinese railing design is taken from the wooden railings of Monticello. The design may have been inspired by Thomas Chippendale's pattern book, The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director, which Jefferson owned. The book quotation is from a letter written by Jefferson to John Adams dated June 10, 1815.
During the 18th century, needlework was an important part of a young girl's education as well as a means of expression. Girls would have been trained at home or school from a very young age. Visit the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg to see many examples of of needlework in our collections.
