Product Description
The "Virginia" Center Basin from Port 68 celebrates the decorative motif pattern of an 18th century chintz fabric from the Colonial Williamsburg collection. The overall floral sprig pattern on our jar is from a fragment of chintz cotton made in India about 1700-1750. Although the original appears to be block printed, variations in the flowers reveal that it was made by the more labor intensive hand mordant-painting and dyeing process. The interior of the bowl border stripe pattern is inspired by a heavily-glazed India block print fabric from 1780-1810. The original fabrics are archived in the Colonial Williamsburg museums.
