Inspiration
Apothecaries, who were trained to diagnose, prescribe and produce treatments through an apprenticeship, acted as doctors in the 18th century. They knew little about chemistry but figured out treatments that could address certain symptoms through trial and error — and observation. Apothecary shops in Colonial America sold many remedies, most of which were imported into Great Britain from around the world. Patients could purchase these remedies along with household items, like toothbrushes, that might be found in today's pharmacies. Eighteenth-century shoppers might also have found tobacco and spices. Visit the Apothecary trade shop in the historic area to see the original jars for yourself.

Definitely not Delft
I was excited to see the return of the tobacco jar to Williamsburg as I have a collection of various sizes and shapes in both polychrome and the Delft blue. I thought this would be great even though it is lidless. It is however a bit of a disappointment as it is from China, not Holland as all the others in my collection are and it is very heavy and thick in comparison. It is immediately obvious that it is not Delft when placed side by side in the collection. However, if you are looking for a standalone piece to remember a nice vacation, this would be a solid choice and would make a perfectly adequate floral vase.
