Inspiration
The design on this striking magnolia pillow is taken from a watercolor painting by Lady Henrietta Somerset, circa 1763, in the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation collections (object #1989-395,14).
The Duchess of Beaufort hired German-born Georg Dionysius Ehret, the most highly-regarded botanical illustrator in England at the time, to teach her daughter, Lady Henrietta Somerset. Ehret instructed Lady Henrietta in watercolor painting at her home, Badminton, the family seat of the Duke of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England. Botanical specimens grown in the gardens at Badminton most likely provided the source for her work.
