Inspiration
The textile collections of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation include numerous examples of block-printed and resist-dyed fabrics. Resist, or reserve prints, involved the application of a paste, such as clay, onto fabric to prevent dye from adhering to the material. The paste was typically painted on by hand or stamped with a block. Resist dyeing has a long history, dating back to Egypt in the second half of the 10th century.
John Clayton was a colonial Virginia minister, clerk for Gloucester, and a botanist known for collecting specimens for naturalists Mark Catesby and Jan Frederik Gronovius. Clayton's work was published in Flora Virginica, compiled by Gronovius in 1739.
