Inspiration
The textile collections of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation include numerous examples of block-printed and resist-dyed fabrics. Resist, or reserve prints, involved the application of a paste, such as clay, onto fabric to prevent dye from adhering to the material. The paste was typically painted on by hand or stamped with a block. Resist dyeing has a long history, dating back to Egypt in the second half of the 10th century.
Famous botanists and naturalists from the 17th and 18th centuries inspired the name of this WILLIAMSBURG collection of vintage vinyl floorcloths from Spicher. Jane Colden was an American botanist known for cataloging and illustrating hundreds of lower Hudson River Valley plants in New York from 1753-1758.
