Product Description
Out of Stock: We are out of root beer but more is on the way! We expect to restock in mid-March. In the meantime, try our delicious Ginger Ale.
The same great root beer served in Colonial Williamsburg taverns and restaurants, Chowning's Tavern Root Beer evolved from a colonial beer made by boiling the roots of sassafras, dandelion or licorice to extract their pungent flavors. The brew of 200 years ago was then sweetened and fermented in wooden casks. A wonderful flavor!

Inspiration
Josiah Chowning opened his tavern in 1766 appealing to the "ordinary sort." Popular lore asserts that the modern sandwich has its origin in the 18th century and was named after John Montagu, the fourth earl of Sandwich. Today's Chowning's Tavern diners can partake in southern favorites like Brunswick stew and Virginia pulled pork sandwiches. And of course, root beer!
