Inspiration
Taverns in Virginia were often rambling story-and-a-half houses of wood, most frequently, located at cross-roads in the country, or at an intersection of streets in a town. The foundations were of brick or stone with basement. A tap room with portcullis grate was on the first floor. The kitchen as a separate building was located to the rear of the tavern.
Frequently, signs were used on taverns in Virginia just as in England. The signs were often painted by travelling artists and hung on the outside to attract the travelers. Other less important or smaller taverns carried no outside sign to advertise their taverns as a stopping place for the weary traveler.
