Inspiration
Soaps were occasionally made at home in the eighteenth century by boiling lime ash and fat over an outdoor fire. However, those who could afford them preferred the finer imported soaps available from local merchants. Imported soaps were generally scented and colored. Soap could be purchased by the ball or the bar. Bars were formed by cooling the hot soap mixture in a large rectangular mold and then cutting the block into individual bars. Round wash balls were hand-shaped.
