Inspiration
The natural world was of great interest to many people of the 18th century, including the residents of Williamsburg. Decorative objects inspired by nature filled the homes of the middling and upper classes, from affordable mass-market china imports to finely painted porcelain.
An engraved print of a parrot, after a George Edwards illustration, is held in the Colonial Williamsburg archives (Object #2018-269,11). Edwards is often cited as the "father of ornithology".
