Inspiration
The natural world was of great interest to many people of the 18th century, including the residents of Williamsburg. Decorative objects adorned with inspirations from nature filled the homes of the middling and upper classes, from affordable imports of china made for the mass market to finely painted porcelains.
An engraved print of a parrot made after a George Edwards illustration is held in the Colonial Williamsburg archives (Object #2018-269,11). Edwards is often cited to be the "father of ornithology".
