Inspiration
On any given day in Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area, you'll see three-cornered cocked hats, or "tricorn" hats, on visitors as well as interpreters. In the 18th century, the hats were often "cocked" so a gentleman could show his wig. Some accounts note that the sides became cocked when military men held their hats under their arms, thereby folding them up. Eventually, gentlemen started folding the sides up on purpose. There was a more practical purpose as well: The turned-up sides funneled rainwater away from the wearer.
