Inspiration
In the 18th-century, the hats were often "cocked" so a gentleman could show his wig. Some accounts note that the sides became cocked when military men would hold their hat under their arm, thereby folding the sides up. Eventually gentlemen started folding the sides up on purpose. Although the modern term for this style is "tricorn hat," the eighteenth-century name was a cocked hat.
