Inspiration
The custom of affixing fruits, such as pomegranates, vegetables, dried flowers, herbs, and other plant life to basic Christmas forms like wreaths, swags, and roping traces its roots to the early years of the 20th century, a time when Christmas was growing in significance and the Colonial Revival was pulling decorative impulses back toward the 18th century. The tradition of adding fruit, such as apples, to holiday decorations continues today at Williamsburg. The Historic Area comes alive during the holidays with fresh wreaths, garlands, and swags, each with a theme for the building or trade shop the decorations adorn.
During the holiday season, the regularly spaced niches, or putlog holes, in the Flemish-bond brick façade of the Palmer House in the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg shine with red apples. The Palmer House floral collection from Winward Florals honors this fun tradition dating back to 1959!

Apple and Magnolia Wreath
I purchased this wreath years ago and love it. I use it outdoors on my protected front porch door from Fall until Spring. It still looks perfect after many years.
