Inspiration
Jewelry with multiple gemstones, or "harlequin jewelry," is inspired by the colorful patchwork costume of the harlequin, a character of the 16th-century Italian Commedia dell'arte. Multicolored gemstone jewelry was popular in the Georgian, Victorian, and post-World War I periods and is trending once again today. Several multi-gemstone pieces in The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation collections date to the 18th century. Some are “paste”, or costume jewelry, and others are made from real gemstones.
